Hi Jerry. Let’s get to the point. My level of interest is high. With that being said I have been burnt in the past by false promises and assumptions and losing millions. Why should I believe you in your proposition? Clearly from my point of view I am signing If I move forward guarantees you a non-refundable franchise fee and solid monthly income in the form of a royalty. And all this without knowing what’s your operating platform and does it really work. Running the managerial/business siting remotely and not knowing if it really works are serious questions. I have been to discovery days offered by others. But explain to me your model before I even come out to you guys. I By the way I have four solid practices with over million production and one doing 3 million. If your model works all four can be under franchise.
Thanks, RB, Illinois
Thanks for reaching out and your direct approach. Like it. This will be a long-winded email…it’s not a substitute for a call by any means, and I’m happy to schedule one next week on Wednesday.
To answer the “operating platform” question — it’s based on my own office and one of my partner’s, Dr. Sean Tarpenning. Sean’s office has grown from 5 ops to now 22. Same location. In middle America, nothing special-ville, just like Salem, Oregon. Where, mine, non-doctor owned, absentee owner (I’m there at most 30 mins per week, some weeks never), from scratch to 3 ops to now 6 and we could be opening up 5 more ops next door as we bring on our 4th doctor. We max out the facility first on days/week and hours then blow out walls. All done with cash. No debt. I hate debt. My office is debt free. Sean’s is damn close after doing a massive expansion.
We operate on a very simple principle: dentistry is available everywhere. The people make all the difference. And, the people must have systems to follow and improve upon. There has to be an abundance of new patients…always. The more pts to present tx to, the more that will say yes. Operating a practice with a patient deficiency SUCKS. And, soon becomes a money suck.
Everything I do for Members and will be doing for franchisees is based on our own “what works” in actual practice, not theory.
How are we different and what can we bring to the table for you?
Stability. Growth. Business expertise. And, a brain trust/mastermind unavailable anywhere else in business: THESE are what power exponential leaps in income and knowledge.
In addition, we’ll have a seasoned, knowledgeable, trained franchise business consultant assigned to your office to visit regularly and be a resource for you and your team when not on site. Not to mention our management team will also be focused on your success.
Here’s what’s interesting: As a franchise, we are only as successful as our least successful office. If you are not successful, we are not. Our mutual success is tied together and our team will be working hard to ensure it. Period.
My other partner in the franchise, Dr. Chris Tomshack, has 350 offices. And, they continue to grow. He knows franchising and the healthcare business better than anyone.
My long-time business partner, Tom Cowan, is an expert in operations and finance. When he retired, he left his company with hundreds of millions in retained earnings and they were in the hole nearly a billion dollars when he started. A major turnaround under his leadership and the team he assembled and trusted to get it done.
Basically, I put the best and brightest minds together to work in harmony and concert on growing an incredible business in dentistry, unlike Heartland, Aspen, et. al. None of us have the skillset another has – we’re each unique and bring something invaluable to the equation. We know our roles and understand them.
By the sounds of things, you’re doing well. But, recognize there is more to be achieved.
What’s the biggest reason why you, personally, would elect to become a franchisee and could ever get from being part of something like this?
I think it might be what I get from it: I can’t do it alone, don’t want to, and want to be part of something bigger than what I can do by myself.
I’ve already done the “solo” thing in business and have done quite well. But, I am sure you’d agree: it’s more fun and we can accomplish more with the right team supporting our visions.
I can own another 9 offices within an hours’ drive of my house, in under 3 or 4 years. While I’d own them, I’d still be by myself and relying on ME to get it all done. Not an enviable position.
With franchising, I’ve got a team to support me. No matter how many offices I want to open or how big I want to get. I don’t have to do it on my own.
And, someone has my back and self-interest in mind.
One of my very good friends owns 15 locations of a local franchise. His locations did over $19MM last year. He took a lot of time off and banked near 50% net. This year, they’ll do over $20, perhaps $21MM. He plans on opening 2 more stores this year.
He couldn’t do that without the support of a great team of experts that allow him to focus on what he’s know best — his unique skill set and talents.
14 years ago, I told myself I wanted to franchise dental offices once I had mine lined out and working like it’s supposed to.
That time is here. And, I’d like nothing more than to have franchisees doing $20MM to $30MM or more a year with the net income that dentistry can provide in well-run, optimized offices in the right locations with the right leadership and the right training and the right focus (100% PATIENT satisfaction!).
I’m not on a mission to be a Heartland. We’re on a mission to make solo practice dentistry viable and great again…with the support of top business and marketing systems and the best clinical training money can buy. All of which the vast majority of solo practices are missing now…and it’s not going to get better.
We might or might not be right for you. I hope we are. But, we’ll have to sniff each other out to make sure it’s a good fit. And, if it is, then we can do things the right way…whatever that turns out to be.
Let’s talk next week. Love to meet you if it feels right to you. I know if you don’t attend, you’ll really never know for sure. But, to begin with, it’s just gotta feel right. See above at the beginning for dates and times to talk.
